Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

At Broome North Primary School, we use PBiS – Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports – as our whole-school framework for promoting and supporting positive behaviour. Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) is a framework for creating safe and orderly learning environments in schools, while improving the social-emotional outcomes for students. It is a proactive approach that relies on research based practices, including developing clear behavioural expectations,  teaching these expectations, acknowledging appropriate behaviour, consistently correcting inappropriate behaviour and using data to systematically solve problems. PBIS is built on a  three tiered model that provides additional behavioural supports to students who are not responding to the tier 1 interventions

Our behaviour expectations are clearly defined, explicitly taught, and consistently reinforced across all areas of the school. Positive behaviour is acknowledged and celebrated, helping to build a strong school culture where students can thrive.

Our School-Wide Expectations

We focus on three simple and clear expectations that are taught and reinforced throughout the year:

  • Be Safe
  • Be Respectful
  • Be a Resilent

These expectations are visible in every classroom, playground, and shared space. We teach what this look like in different settings, so every child knows how to succeed.

How It Works at Our School

Explicit Teaching
We dedicate time throughout the year to teach expected behaviours directly – just like we teach reading and maths.

Visual Prompts and Routines
Posters, signs, and routines support students in knowing what to do, where to go, and how to interact positively.

Acknowledging Positive Behaviour
Students are regularly recognised through our PBIS tokens, certificates, classroom rewards, and whole-school assemblies.

Data-Informed Decisions
We track and analyse behaviour data using the Department’s tracking tools (e.g., Chronicle) to guide support, celebrate success, and identify areas for improvement.

Tiered Supports
While PBIS is for all students, we also provide extra layers of support:

Tier 1 – Universal supports for everyone

Tier 2 – Targeted support for students who need extra help

Tier 3 – Individualised support for students with complex needs

How Families Are Involved

We believe that positive behaviour starts with strong partnerships. Parents and carers are included through:

Opportunities to contribute to ongoing school improvement

Regular communication about behaviour expectations and successes

Invitations to PBIS celebrations and assemblies

Why PBIS Works

PBIS is not just about managing behaviour – it’s about building a positive culture where students feel safe, valued, and ready to learn. It supports our broader goals for wellbeing, engagement, and achievement.
