Yawuru Nilawarl: Jigily

English Name: Butterfly tree or mother-in-law tree

Scientific Name: Lysiphyllum cunninghamii (Caesalpiniaceae)

The Jigily has green, butterfly-shaped leaves with reddish pods, and the flowers are red and rich with nectar. The position and the shape of the leaves reflect a traditional social behaviour: the son-in-law cannot face or look at his mother-in-law. The wood is good for fires as they burn slowly, and green paint can be made from the leaves by chewing them. The Jigily flower from the start of Marrul to the middle of Laja and fruit from the start of Wirlburu until the end of Laja.
